it's because of a french nursery rhyme... :

Une souris verte,

qui courrait dans l'herbe

on l'attrape par la queue

on la montre à ces messieurs

ces messieurs nous disent,

trempez-la dans l'huile,

trempez-la dans l'eau

et vous obtiendrez un escargot tout chaud !

in english it would be :

A green mouse,

that ran in the grass

and you will get a snail all hot!
